Goan Seafarers Association of India (GSAI) spokesman Dixon Vaz has said the government has released the pension of the retired seafarers which was not paid for the last two months.

He said the release of the pension comes close on the heels of the GSAI delegation’s meeting with deputy with Deputy CM Vijai Sardesai with a host of demands of the seafaring community.

“The seafarers did not receive the pensions of April and May. However the NRI commissioner office has confirmed that the June pension has also been released. In the meeting, the Dy CM had warned the officials that such situations should not arise in the future as seafarers bring a lot of remittance to the state and it is the government’s responsibility to safeguard their interests,” he said.

Dixon pointed out that GSAI has received several calls from seamen and widows that they received messages that the pension has been sent to their accounts.

“The seafarers have thanked Vijai Sardesai. We are very satisfied with the meeting with Sardesai as he has promised to put the NRI office in place so that all our issues are resolved once and for all,” Dixon added.
