Vendors led by former MLA, Babu Azgaonkar, and president of the Gandhi market vegetable and readymade garment Association, Rajendra Azgaonkar, threatened to shut down the market and take out the morcha if the accused is not arrested within 24 hours.
The Azgaonkar brothers led the morcha to the municipality on Thursday noon, demanding to know from the Chief Officer Y T Tawde the steps initiated by the civic body to get the accused arrested.
Babu charged the Margao municipality for its failure to put pressure on the Margao police over the delay in effecting the arrest of the accused.
“The security guard was mercilessly beaten up by the accused, but the police are yet to lay their hands on the accused till date. Though a complaint was lodged with the Margao police, the men-in-uniform have failed to effect the arrest till date,” Babu charged, adding that people of Margao will loose faith in the police machinery if the cops fails to book the guilty.
Chief Officer Tawde said that he would write a letter to the Margao police regarding the delay on the part of the police in nabbing the accused.
Meanwhile, Babu Azgaonkar told the media that the Margao municipality has again failed to clear the encroachments on the city roads. He said though MMC chairperson Babita Angle Prabhudesai had initiated a driver against the encroachers and illegal vendors, hawkers have again returned back in front of the Comunidade building and others places, right under the nose of the Municipal authorities.
