The National Health Family Survey 4 (NFHS-4) conducted for the year 2015-16 revealed that from infant mortality rates to child birth and care, Goa has been found to do well. It also scored high in terms of child immunization and nutritional status.
India’s infant mortality rate showed a considerable decline in numbers -- from 57 per 1,000 live births to 41 per 1,000 live births -- in the latest survey. The under five mortality rate figure was put at 50 per 1,000 live births.
Goa’s numbers were one of the lowest and showed a decline from 15 per 1,000 live births during NFHS 3 to 13 per 1,000 live births in NFHS 4.
Mothers giving birth to children in the State were also found to be better off than most of those in the rest of the country. The all India average of mothers that had a full antenatal care was 21 per cent, 31 percent in the urban area and 16.7 per cent in rural. In comparison 63.4 per cent of Goan mothers received full antenatal health care. Almost 50 per cent of children born had received a health check after birth from a doctor, nurse or midwife. The all India figure was only 24.3 per cent.
In the field of immunization, all children between the age group of 12 to 23 months received BCG vaccines, while the India figure was 91.9 per cent.
