While the fair price shop owner Pundalik Raikar maintained that the ration card holders have been asked to produce their Aadhaar card details to update their ration cards, the holders said they are made to stand in queue for hours, while demanding streamlining of the exercise.
Raikar said that he has been only asked to collect the Aadhaar card details from the ration card holders and send the documents to the Civil Supplies department at Margao for processing. “May be the ration card holders had failed to submit these documents at the time of making the new cards”, he said.
Former Benaulim Sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes, however, begged to differ and blamed the Mamlatdar office for the same. “How can they blame the people when the authorities had failed in their job of updating the ration cards. I have cases wherein people had moved for deletion of names of deceased, but the new ration cards have been issued with names of the deceased as well,” Carmelina said, while saying that the people have only been put to great hardships for no fault of theirs.
Local resident Roque Fernandes echoed similar sentiments. He said the system should be streamlined with additional manpower as some of the people have been
standing in queue for more than an hour.
Many of those in the queue said that the process should be simplified so that the residents are not inconvenienced.
