But when these projects are promoted by rivals and with elections in mind, these works are not always considered favourably by the unhappy elected representatives.
In one such case, Dabolim MLA Mauvin Godinho has accused the PWD (building division) of illegal activities at New Vaddem and Vaddem at the behest of a rival in Dabolim constituency.
Speaking to media persons at his office in Chicalim Panchayat Ghar on Tuesday, Godinho said he had filed a complaint with the Vigilance department and the police on January 12, claiming that PWD (building division) in Mormugao had been involved in illegal activities without following necessary government procedure.
Godinho, a Congress MLA who has virtually severed ties with his party, is keen to contest from Dabolim constituency on the BJP ticket. But the MGP alliance partner has refused to part with the Dabolim seat on grounds that it had narrowly lost the elections to Godinho in the 2012 polls.
“Acting on my complaint, the Vigilance department and the police swung into action and stopped all the ongoing works at New Vaddem and Vaddem,” he said.
“However, illegal works of laying pavers, painting and hot mixing at New Vaddem has resumed in full swing without any work orders and financial sanctions from the government,” added Godinho.
“I have spoken to the PWD executive engineer, who informed me that he had directed the contractor and the PWD (building) assistant not to execute any works at Vaddem and New Vaddem.”
Godinho warned the PWD (building division) that if the works are not stopped immediately, then he will be forced to file another complaint with the Vigilance department
and the police against the
illegal works.
“If both agencies fail to act on the complaint, I will stage a protest in front of the PWD (building division) at Vasco,” warned Godinho.
Godinho added that he had raised the issue on the floor of the house and had brought to the notice of the government on how PWD was involved in illegalities by carrying out works without obtaining necessary government permissions.
