Canacona-based NGO 'Goenkar' provided health insurance cover worth Rs 7 lakh each to 35 municipal garbage workers on Labour Day.
At a brief function organised behind Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) building at Chaudi, Goenkar handed health insurance (Rs 5 lakh accident cover and Rs 2 lakh hospitalization) to each of the 35 municipal workers.
Simultaneously, a gift bag consisting of an umbrella, a towel and a torch was handed over to the garbage workers by CMC Chairperson Prathana Gaunkar, Deputy Chairperson Samita Dhuri, Councillors Bharati Soiru Komarpant, Divakar Pagi and Guru Komarpant.
Goenkar president Jack Fernandes said, “It's a shame that Labour Day, which is meant to celebrate, is used by some politicians to felicitate themselves. Labour Day should be about these workers who work so hard to make our life easier,” he said apparently hinting to the BJP’s Unnati programme scheduled later in the day at Chaudi.
Goenkar general secretary Vikas Bhagat said, “We gave each of the workers a health insurance and a gift bag. It's a small gift for all the great work these workers are doing for the whole of Canacona.”
Several others including the benefactors of Goenkar were present for the programme.
