Belagavi police have stepped up measures to prevent the entry of Goa-made liquor in Belagavi district on New Year’s day.
A large number of people from Belagavi region visit Goa to celebrate the New Year and are likely to return with Goa liquor. Bootleggers also take opportunity to illegally procure Goa-made liquor.
Mindful of these possibilities, Belagavi police have taken up special measures in Khanapur taluka at Goa borders in this regards.
In-charge Superintendent of Police (SP) Amarnath Reddy has also warned of strict action against drunken driving and triple seat riding on bikes during New Year celebrations.
SP Reddy emphasised that stringent action would be taken against violators to ensure public safety while entry of illicit Goa liquor making inroads in Belagavi district would be strictly checked at the border.
About 45 check posts have been set up at the borders he said.
“To maintain law and order during the festivities, over 1,000 police personnel, including five Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) units, have been deployed across the district,” said SP Reddy.
“Checkposts have been set up at prominent tourist spots especially on the Goa border and other key locations to monitor activities. The surveillance at district borders will continue for few more days. Apart from CCTV, police will be carrying body cameras for booking those creating nuisance.”
The SP highlighted specific concerns, such as individuals creating disturbances by making noise under the influence of alcohol or riding motorcycles with three or more passengers. “CCTV cameras have been mandated at public venues, and additional staff have been directed to monitor areas with swimming pools to prevent untoward incidents,” he added.
