Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Thursday said Union Law Minister Arjun Meghwal has assured to remove any hindrances, if any, in the implementation of the Law providing for political reservations for the Scheduled Tribes in Goa.
Speaking to the media on the side lines of the 7th Adivasi Student Conference held at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on Thursday, Tawadkar informed that a delegation of ST leaders from Goa called on the Union Law Minister earlier this week to find out if any technical impediments have come in the way of the implementation of the Law enacted by Parliament on political reservations for the ST communities.
After giving the delegation a patient hearing, the Minister said that the Union Minister has assured to look into the issues raised by the ST communities on the question of implementation of the law. “The Union Law Minister was kind enough to assure the delegation that he would ensure that technical issues, if any, would be overcome to give effect to the Act passed by Parliament. Meghwal has assured to remove any issues with the next 8-10 days and get back to the Goa government”, he said.
To a question on the possibility of implementing political reservations for the ST communities in the 2027 Assembly election, Tawadkar said the government is making all attempts to ensure that the law is given effect in the 2027 Assembly election. “After our meeting with the Union Law Minister, we have realised there is no major problem to implement the law on reservations. Hence, we feel confident that the law will be given effect in the coming Assembly election”, he said.
On the question of delimitation of Assembly constituencies to give effect to the Law on political reservations, Tawadkar said the issue was not discussed with the Union Minister.
On the long-pending ST bhavan, the Tribal Welfare Minister said work on the project is expected to commence within the next two months. “The issue had hit a deadlock over the absence of technical cell with the Tribal Welfare department But, we have addressed the issue now and the work should hopefully commence within the next two months”, he said, adding that land is not an issue since the land in question is already handed over to the government.
