After a successful protest to get the government to scrap the IIT project in their village, locals of Melauli have now threatened a protest in Panaji if the FIRs registered against the protestors are not withdrawn by Friday.

Addressing a news conference in Murmune on Wednesday, the locals said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had assured to revoke all FIRs against the anti-IIT agitators but the Crime Branch had been pursuing action against the protestors.

“The protestors are being asked to furnish a bond of Rs 25,000 each and we cannot afford this amount. We are being threatened with arrest,” said Shankar Naik.

“If the State government does not revoke all FIRs against the agitators by Friday, the Shel Melavali Bachao Samiti will stage a protest in Panaji.”

“On the one hand, the chief minister is assuring to revoke all FIRs against the protestors and on the other hand the police is pursuing action against the protestors. Those named in the FIRs will not furnish any bond of Rs 25,000,” Naik added.

Sadyo Malekar, a youth from Melauli, also demanded the cancellation of the transfer of Anganwadi worker Lata Gaonkar who was been transferred from Sattari Taluka to Canacona Taluka.

Local Panch Arjun Melekar said the people of Melauli had participated in the agitation to get the IIT project moved out of the village.

“The chief minister should stick to his assurance to withdraw all cases against the agitators,” said Melekar.
