Menace of drugs to be tackled in coordination with all states: CM

PANAJI

Fresh from his return after attending the 'chintan shivir' of the country's home ministers in Haryana, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said combating the menace of drugs and related issues will be in coordination with all states.

Notably, Sawant highlighted issues of narco-policing dealt with in the shivir of home ministers of all states at a time when the prevalence of the menace in Goa has remained in sharp focus for weeks following the alleged murder of BJP's Haryana leader Sonali Phogat following a night out at a controversial beach shack in Anjuna.

In the aftermath of Phogat's alleged murder, a massive narco-trade investigation by the Telangana and Andhra Pradesh police with links to Anjuna and operators of some prominent night clubs in that tourism hub also raised the spectre of friction between Goa police and the forces of those States.

Sawant said that as per the discussions held at the 'shivir', all states will work towards combating issues of drugs as Team India.

"Discussions took place on coastal security, terrorism, police, Naxalites and other drugs-related issues," Sawant said.

“Police reforms were also discussed such as the way forward with valuable guidance from Union Home Minister Amit Shah,” he added.

Chief ministers of eight states and home ministers and deputy chief ministers of 16 more attended the two-day shivir in Faridabad, Haryana.

Besides being chaired by Shah, one of the sessions was addressed virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who suggested a common uniform for police forces of all states and also cautioned on the potential of fake news to trigger tension and violence.
