“There is a need to improve the infrastructure of Mapusa market and develop it to an international standard. We will urge the government to provide special grant for developing new infrastructure in the market,” Shirodkar said while addressing a news conference at a city hotel along with the other association members.
The MMA president informed that the association would celebrate its 32nd Founder’s Day on April 10.
“Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Urban Development Minister and local MLA Francis D’Souza will attend the celebration function. Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Sandip Falari and Vice-Chairperson Marlene D’Souza will also be present on the occasion,” he said.
He said many people’s livelihood depended on the Mapusa market while thousands of consumers visit the market on a daily basis.
“More than 5,000 people do business in the market and eke out a living. About `75 crore is paid as taxes to various government agencies including the municipal council,” Shirodkar said. He said besides the fish and vegetable market, not much development in terms of infrastructure has taken place in the market. Expressing unhappiness on Mapusa Municipal Council’s lethargy to take tough action, Shirodkar said the civic body has failed to act on various suggestions put up by the association.
