The Goa government has, as promised by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant late last week, filed an application before the Supreme Court of India seeking to restrain Karnataka from going ahead with the Kalsa Bandura diversion project across the river Mhadei and has mentioned the matter before the Supreme Court.
In a statement, Sawant said the application “for interim relief restraining Karnataka from carrying on any activity / construction over it’s project on Mhadei river” was filed.
“The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the matter for hearing on March 2, 2020. Sr Adv Mukul Rohotgi mentioned the matter before the bench presided over by Justice D Y Chandrachud for [an] urgent hearing,” Sawant said.
Sawant promised that the state would file an application seeking interim stay after the news that SC granted Karnataka’s plea that the tribunal’s award will have to be notified before it can be challenged.
The Opposition had called the government’s decision not to oppose Karnataka’s plea as a ‘black day’ for Goa and had sought that the government present a ‘white paper’ on the Mhadei dispute within 30 days or face an agitation.
