Vice-chairman of Entertainment Society of Goa, Subhash Phaldesai on Tuesday clarified that the present structure of the multiplex (commonly known as INOX) will not be demolished and only renovation will be carried out.
The tendering of the multiplex has been done and INOX Leisure Limited has again bagged the tender to operate as per the Build-Own-Transfer (BOT) agreement.
The multiplex, however, will be shut for six months and the State will not have to spend any money on renovation, said Phaldesai.
As per the new contract the State will get a monthly rent of Rs 54 lakh with 5 per cent increase every year.
Earlier, the ESG had decided to construct an upgraded version of its multiplex by demolishing the present structure housing four screens and which was constructed
in 2004.
The ESG had invited bids for construction of multiplex at the same place with two bidders -- PVR Cinema and INOX Leisure Private Limited -- submitting their claims.The multiplex was built in 2004 during first IFFI by then chief minister Manohar Parrikar by demolishing the Portuguese-era medical
college building.
The Congress had raised a hue and cry over the proposed demolition and had strongly opposed the move saying the State could not afford this additional burden when it was going through a financial crisis. Many history lovers had also opposed the move to demolish the premises.
Veer Zara was the first movie screened in this multiplex, which was State’s first such facility. The multiplex has been hosting IFFI annually besides showcasing the films on regular basis.
