Despite the hot sun, people began queuing at midnight outside the Sanguem Municipal building, hoping to win one of the Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal’s big prizes.
By the time the sale of donation coupons started at 9 a.m. today, the queue stretched about 1.5 kilometres, reaching the Government Sports Complex in Sanguem.
Those who joined the line as early as 6 a.m. had to wait until around 2 p.m. to reach the counter, but they still wore happy smiles.
Because of the huge response, the organisers, who had first allowed one book of ten tickets per person, reduced it to five tickets each. By evening, all coupons were sold out.
A total of 1.5 lakh coupons were issued, each costing Rs 500. The grand prize is a double-bedroom flat in Fatorda plus Rs 35 lakh in cash.
The second prize is a double-bedroom flat in Curchorem and Rs 29.5 lakh. The third prize is a Mahindra XEV plus Rs 14.2 lakh, and the fourth is a Tata Harrier EV plus Rs 11.5 lakh.
The fifth prize is an MG Windsor Plus and Rs 8.75 lakh. Prizes from sixth to tenth are a Tata Punch EV plus Rs 5 lakh. The 11th to 15th prizes are a Maruti Fronx SUV plus Rs 4 lakh, and the 16th to 20th prizes are a Tata Tiago EV plus Rs 4 lakh.
In earlier years, the coupon sale was contracted to outsiders, but this time the organisers handled it themselves.
They have announced that part of the proceeds will go towards the ongoing construction of the Shri Paikdev Temple at Temchowaddo, Sanguem.
