Urban Development Minister Milind Naik along with Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) councillors inspected the functioning of the newly set up legacy waste treatment plant at Sada. Naik after the inspection voiced satisfaction as two big heaps of garbage from the garbage dumping site at Sada was shifted to the new legacy waste plant and treated successfully.
The new legacy waste treatment plant at Sada has cleared around 10,000 tonnes of garbage in ten days of the plant being inauguarted.
Naik speaking to reporters after the inspection said that looking at the statistics, it was proven that the legacy waste plant would finish the entire legacy waste dump of around 1.20 lakh tonnes well before monsoons while also generating high value compost of the treated waste.
“The contractor is doing a great job under the Goa waste management and the huge plant was set up in fifteen days and in ten days of being set up, it has already cleared so much quantity. Even though the plant has not got electricity connection as yet, the contractor and the company have arranged two generators so that time is not wasted. Today the strength of workers have increased from 20 to 50 and the plant has set up a shed so that workers don’t face any inconveniences of scorching heat. We under GSUDA alloted them the land and the plant was set up with the initiative of Waste management Minister Michael Lobo and support of CM Dr Pramod Sawant.” said Naik.
“As per statistics and at the rate of 1,000 tonnes per day, the legacy dumps will be cleared by monsoon because presently the plant is running for 16 hours a day and soon it will work for around 20 hours a day.
“The main highlight about this plant is that the contractor has added some chemicals and there is no foul smell anywhere near the plant and there are also no stray animals or birds. A huge amount of compost is also ready from the treated quantity of garbage at the plant and the capacity of the plant is now proven. The contractor has assured me that the he will clear the entire garbage dumping site and make a flat ground for us to use, “ added Naik
MMC Councillor, Murari Bandekar said that the nuisance of smell was not present in the area where the plant was set up. “After seeing the functioning of this plant which is operating in a sophisticated manner and systematically, we feel that garbage issue is peanuts and we can soon have a garbage-free Goa and today the entire area of Sada is extremely happy that the garbage heap at the garbage dumping site is reducing while the plant is operating without any smell nuisance,” said Bandekar.
MMC Councillor Shashikant Parab said, “Soon the Sada people will get relief from the garbage issue and the credit of this solely goes to Urban Development minister Milind Naik,” Parab added.
