Rising opposition to Mini India park project in Quelossim took the centre stage at the Quelossim Gram Sabha on Sunday. It witnessed heated discussion over the project that was allegedly being proposed over a Khazan land in the village. Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha was present for the Gram Sabha.
The villagers have demanded that a site inspection be taken up since the project proponents have also built a gate to deny access to them to the riverfront where villagers carry out traditional fishing activities.
The Gram Sabha later resolved to get the gates opened after a site inspection to the area.Village Biodiversity Chairman and social activist Lopinho Xavier said that the villagers had decide to oppose the project and they would not allow any development in the khazan land at any cost. “There is a lot of mud put inside the area of the project and coconut trees are being planted. When I recently went for a site visit, I saw works were being carried out inside and I alerted the Dy Sarpanch Sebastian Serrao and stopped their work by calling the flying squad. Dy Sarpanch was reluctant to call the flying squad. Flying Squad after inspection told the supervisor that no mud can be placed as the land was khazan land,” said Xavier.
