Mining resumption key to overcome economic crisis: CII

PANAJI
Resumption of mining is key to overcoming the economic challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Goa chapter of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has said in a document it released to accelerate the State's economy.

With tourism also badly hit by the pandemic, the CII said in its 'white paper' that resumption of iron ore mining could play a "huge role' to generate jobs and restart Goa's traditional economy.

The white paper also suggest reforms for the mining sector, brought to a halt by Supreme Court bans in 2012 and again in 2018.

Tweaking Central mineral policy and regulations, phase wise halt to mining in eco-sensitive zones, regulatory mechanism to check illegal mining are some reforms the CII white paper suggests.

It said, tourism was a key employment generator after mining halted but with the pandemic this sector too is facing a challenge and mining resumption is crucial.

"Resumption of mining can play a huge role in generating employment and restart Goa's traditional economic engine," it added.
