MARGAO
In view of the incident of defacement of property reported in the city, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat on Tuesday reviewed the security arrangements at the historic Lohia Maidan as well as at the Sonsodo waste management site with Margao Municipal officials.
In fact, the PWD Minister issued strict instructions to Margao municipal engineers to conduct surprise weekly checks at the Lohia Maidan as well as at Sonsodo as part of the security review.
Since both the Lohia Maidan and the Sonsodo waste management site comes under the Margao Municipal Council, the Minister underscored the need to review the security arrangements on priority.
Kamat, however, later told the media that it is not possible to put security guards everywhere to keep miscreants at bay. “At how many places can security be deployed in the city? It is not possible to deploy security round the clock at all places,” he said.
To a question, the Minister said the Margao police is on the job to scan the CCTV cameras of adjoining buildings and establishments to zero in on the culprits. “The Margao police officers have briefed me about the defacement at the Lohia Maidan and at the Old Collectorate building. They have expressed their confidence of nabbing the culprits,” he said.
As far as Sonsodo is concerned, the Minister issued strict instructions to MMC officials to conduct late night checks at the site to verify the ground reality. When he was informed that security personnel provided by the Human Resources Corporation are deployed at both the Lohia Maidan and at Sonsodo, Kamat stressed on the need to conduct surprise checks to ensure the personnel do not sleep on duty.
