MLA assures to get sewage pumping stations in Fatorda

MARGAO
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on Sunday assured Fatordekars that he would make a strong case with the government to install sewage pumping stations in the city on the lines of Panaji and Vasco to ensure smooth sewage flow in areas where the topography does not support flow by gravity.

The Fatorda MLA has also warned that he does not want the SGPDA market to become another Gandhi market, while issuing instructions to the Municipal officials to crack a whip against illegal hawking.

With the ambitious Margao sewerage project based on gravity sans pumping stations, the issue over the sewage flow in the underground line took the centrestage at the MLA’s Sunday Dialogues at the Goemkar Ghor on Sunday.

After an official maintained that pumping stations are an answer to the sewage flow in certain localities and that the residents will have to foot the bill for the pumping stations, Sardesai said the residents of Fatorda cannot be discriminated against if the government has adopted the sewage project based on gravity. “If the sewerage system in Panaji and Vasco is based on pumping stations, the same should be extended to Fatorda as well without extra cost for the citizens,” he said, while promising to take up the matter in the ensuing session of the Legislative Assembly.

The MLA also assured to take up the issue of providing subsidies to residential housing societies to replace the old underground line connecting the society to the pipeline.

Citizens also raised the issue of non-functioning of streetlights for want of forklift to repair the defunct lamps. “If the government is charging for the electricity and the Margao Municipality is paying the power bills, then it is the responsibility of the Electricity Department to maintain the streetlights,” he added.

After citizens complained of absence of pre-monsoon works in their wards, the MLA admitted that the civic body has not been able to give relief to the citizens despite his panel controlling the civic body. “We have to streamline the functioning of certain Municipal departments,” he added.

On complaints of mushrooming of illegal hawkers and handcarts in and around the SGPDA market, Sardesai warned that people of Fatorda will never allow making the SGPDA market into another Gandhi market.
