Former PWD Minister and sitting MLA Nilesh Cabral has extended his full support to promote tiatr among the younger generation, stating that the art form is an integral part of Goa’s cultural heritage and must be preserved for future generations.
Cabral was speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of the 5th Inter-College/Higher Secondary Tiatr Competition, held at Ravindra Bhavan, Sanvordem on Saturday. The event is being organized under the banner of the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG).
“Tiatr has a proud history of 133 years. It is time that we push for its global recognition. I fully support efforts to secure the UNESCO heritage tag for tiatr, a resolution that was recently passed in the Goa Legislative Assembly,” Cabral said. He called upon tiatr lovers and the Goan community to inspire the youth to embrace tiatr, not just as a cultural activity but as a profession worth pursuing.
Cabral stated that the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is fully committed in getting the UNESCO recognition to tiatr as he also praised the Anthony Barbosa, President, TAG in taking all affords toward promoting tiatr.
Anthony Barbosa, President of TAG, echoed Cabral’s sentiments, urging parents to encourage their children to participate actively in the tiatr movement.
“We are committed to promoting tiatr among the youth and are taking serious steps to ensure the next generation continues this rich legacy,” Barbosa stated.
Marcos Gonsalves, Vice-President of TAG, was also present at the event, which marked the beginning of a week-long competition featuring performances from various educational institutions.
The competition kicked off with a performance of the tiatr ‘Thapttak Thapott’, written by William Fernandes and presented by Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science, Margao. A total of six tiatrs are scheduled to be staged during the course of the competition.
Also present on the occasion were Carlos Fernandes, Member Secretary of TAG, along with members Avito Pires de Menezes, Arnaldo Costa, William Fernandes, and tiatr artist Leslie Pereira, who shared the dais.
The event aims to provide a platform for young talent and ensure the continuity of Goa’s beloved tiatr tradition through academic and cultural engagement.
