St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar accompanied by the eight Ponda postmen, whose services were terminated, met the Sr Superintendent of Post M Narsima Swamy at his office in Panaji on Wednesday and demanded that they be reinstated.
Borkar pointed out that the postmen have been working for 10 to 18 years and their services have been suddenly terminated, leaving them in the lurch.
“And to add salt to injury, candidates from Maharashtra have been absorbed in their place,” the MLA pointed out, while informing that it is injustice done to the locals.
Borkar tried to convince Swamy that the locals need to be reinstated as they have nowhere to go and at this age, they do not have any other options.
However, Swamy said he does not have anything in his hand and advised the MLA to approach higher authorities to redress his grievances.
But, not satisfied with the result, MLA Borkar then told the Sr Superintendent to give him in writing that he has no powers to reinstate the postmen and that everything is with the Ministry of Communications.
After getting the same in writing, MLA Borkar informed reporters that he will now approach the North Goa MP, South Goa MP as well as the chief minister to demand justice to the postmen.
“However, this episode has shown that the BJP government is least bothered about the plight of the Goans who are denied jobs in the central departments. On one side, MP Shripad Naik is decrying over lack of central jobs to locals but on the other side he has failed to take up the issue of the terminated postmen,” Borkar informed and lambasted the BJP government for paying lip service towards the welfare of Goans.
“The CM is talking about vocal for local, Swayampurna Goem, but shows no sympathy towards the local postmen whose services have been terminated without any valid reason,” Borkar stated and added that he would raise the issue in the Assembly as well to highlight the ill-treatment meted out to Goans by the BJP.
When questioned by The Goan whether the MLA would take legal recourse on the issue, Borkar said that the legal team of Revolutionary Goans would go through the documentation first.
“Once we are able to build up a strong case, then we will approach the Labour Court,” he added.
