MLA requests govt to hand over Hospicio to Church

MARGAO

The request made by the Church to the government to hand over parts of the old Hospicio building to Caritas to start a healthcare centre found its echo in the Goa Legislative Assembly.

Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai raised the matter during discussions on issues relating to Health. Drawing the attention of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to the condition of the Hospicio hospital building after the shifting of services to the district hospital, Sardesai feared that the building might collapse for want of maintenance, even as he requested the government to hand over the Hospicio building to Caritas to start a healthcare centre.

The over 150-year-old heritage Hospicio hospital building was left vacant after the shifting of the hospital services to the new South Goa district hospital.

The Archdiocese of Goa and Daman had written a letter to the Director of Health Services to hand over parts of the Hospicio building for a proposed health care centre.

Fr Antonio Joao de Miranda had started the hospital to cater to the needs of the society.
