MMC admin mired in corrupt practices: Fatorda Forward

Alleging corruption in the administration of Margao Municipal Council, the Fatorda Forward panel ruling the Margao civic body has asked citizens to retaliate with chappals if any officer insists on bribes, even as Chairperson Babita Angle Prabudesai admitted that the elected council has no control over the administration, including the technical section.

Addressing the media, Fatorda Forward Convenor, MLA Vijai Sardesai, said that corruption has not come to a stop since the new council has taken over the reigns after the October 2015 Municipal poll. “The situation has reached a point wherein the technical section does not cooperate with the elected body. There are instances wherein people complain to us of extortion by certain officers. The rot continues,” Sardesai said, while saying that the Fatorda Forward will support the citizens if they hit back at the corrupt officials with chappals. “Let anyone prove that my councilors have been involved in any corruption. But certain corrupt officials have sullied the image of the elected body,” he said.
Citing an instance, Sardesai said the MMC Chairperson had recently issued a circular asking the technical section officers to stop issuing occupancy certificates for buildings till Ganesh Chathurti and instead go on the field.
“We have come to know that the technical section has issued four occupancy certificates in violation of the Chairperson’s circular. This only goes to prove that the officials were in haste to issue the occupancy certificates,” he said.
Sardesai further said that the municipal administration has granted permission for a kiosk in the road widening area near the PWD office in violation of the rules, saying the municipality should refer the case to the Anti-Corruption Bureau for a
detailed probe.
The Chairperson further claimed the MMC has no system of maintaining the central outward register, saying the office of the Director of Municipal Administration was surprised that there’s no such mechanism in place in the civic body.
