The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has allotted three places to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), so that people from neighbouring panchayats areas can dump their garbage at these sites.
The MMC took the initiative after finding people from panchayat areas close to Mapusa dumping garbage along the Canca-Parra road near Bodgeshwar temple, Asilo Hospital, Remanso hospital, Carraswaddo, Canca by-pass and Mapusa market.
This would have formed huge dumps, giving MMC a tough time to clear it out.
In a bid to tackle the menace, MMC had installed a CCTV near the garbage dumping site at Ganeshpuri and had threatened an FIR against those found dumping garbage. The idea failed and no action was initiated in the matter.
Working out a temporary solution to the issue, the MMC chairperson, chief officer and officials of GWMC convened a meeting with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar.
During this meeting, Parrikar advised the MMC to allot land to the GWMC to install dustbins, so the people from nearby panchayat areas could dump garbage in them.
Accordingly, the MMC has allotted land to the GWMC near Asilo hospital, Ganeshpuri-Marna road and Canca-Parra road to install the dustbins. The GWMC will lift this garbage and will send it to Saligao garbage treatment plant.
Speaking to The Goan, MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said that garbage from these three sites will be lifted GWMC by using its own vehicles and manpower.
"The GWMC presently lifts the garbage strewn along the highways and from now onwards, the garbage will be lifted from these three places as well. With this, we hope that garbage wont be littered everywhere on the
roads and Mapusa will be free from the garbage menace," he added.
