Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Nandadeep Raut has requested people of Vasco to cooperate with the council and offer only segregated garbage to the door-to-door collection agents, to resolve garbage menace in the port town.
Raut, who celebrated his birthday on Tuesday, told reporters said resolving the garbage was one of his biggest priorities and that, public handing over segregated garbage would be the best gift to help him achieve one of his biggest targets as chairperson of MMC.
Stating that the MMC had been taking active steps to resolve garbage issues plaguing the port town, Raut said: “During my tenure as chairperson, the MMC has cleared around 19 dark spots and is planning to beautify the area to deter people from throwing garbage.”
“There are a few dark spots which need to be cleared. The MMC will take strict action on any people throwing garbage on roadsides from November 1,” said Raut.
“From November 1, the MMC will only accept segregated garbage and penalties would be levied on houses not offering segregated garbage. The garbage issue cannot be resolved till people start offering segregated garbage and I request everyone to cooperate with MMC and only offer segregated
garbage.”
The MMC chairperson said the council plans to collect wet waste daily, while dry garbage will be collected thrice a week.
“We also plan to come with a toll-free number for garbage collection which is bigger in volume and is available only after duck. Those running eateries or households who want to offer garbage at night can call on this number and get the garbage collection done,” said Raut.
MMC Councilllor Yatin Kamurlekar said the MMC had cleared four dark spots in his ward.
“The MMC chairperson has taken some active steps and has been very aggressive in addressing garbage issues. Raut has also written to the DMA and on Tuesday, the MMC got 400-plus big-sized garbage bins.”
“I request the people of all 25 wards to kindly offer segregated waste which will help the MMC in a big way,” said Kamurlekar.
