VASCO
Former Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) councillor Krishna Daji Salkar and his wife and sitting councillor, Shami Salkar, on Friday appealed to the council to immediately act on dilapidated buildings in the port town, some of which had been vacated long ago.
Speaking to reporters, Daji Salkar said there are around eight extremely unsafe buildings in the heart of Vasco city which could collapse at any moment.
“Small pieces of slabs from the buildings have fallen on people while walking on footpaths and we barricaded the area immediately. As councillor, I had written on two occasions to MMC regarding these unsafe and dangerous buildings.”
“Some buildings belong to MMC and we also have some staff living in those unsafe buildings. The MMC must act before it is too late," he said.
MMC Councillor Shami Salkar said some unsafe buildings were in close proximity of government offices as well, posing a danger to large number of visitors.
"The building opposite the police station is also unsafe and there have been incidents where pieces of slabs from the building have fallen down. I have also written to the MMC chief officer now to demolish these unsafe buildings after following due procedures,” said Shami.
