MMC begins pre-monsoon work in the city

The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has begun pre-monsoon work in the city to avoid water logging of streets during the rains.
Despite the shortage of labourers, the MMC has begun the pre-monsoon works and has cleared most drains which were clogged with muck and plastic.
Speaking to The Goan, Vasco Councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar said he had taken the initiative to clear the city drains well before the monsoons, to avoid water logging of areas in the city.
“Due to lack of time last year, we could not clear most of the city drains and as a result, there was water logging along the Swantantra Path road,” said Salkar.
“After witnessing water logging in the city last year, I thought of cleaning the drains and removing the muck so that the drains are free well ahead of the monsoons this year.”
When reminded that the drains could get clogged again within the next three months, Salkar replied, “Just before the monsoon, I will conduct a second drive of cleaning the drains.”
“Even if I do not succeed in cleaning all drains the second time, the muck would be less and water accumulation will be minimum this time.”
When MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik was contacted, she stated that the council had taken the initiative to clear city drains on a priority basis, to avoid inconvenience to residents due to water logging of streets.
“We have almost finished cleaning all the drains and once the work in the city is over, we will divert our attention to other wards,” said Naik.
“We will also clear the drains and nullahs of other wards before the monsoon, so that other residents also do not face any problem,” Naik added.
Responding to the shortage of labourers, Naik replied, “Just because there is shortage of labourers, we cannot wait till we get sufficient labourers. We have written to the Directorate of Municipality about the shortage and as and when it is sanctioned, we will deploy them and get the work done at a faster pace.”
