MARGAO
In a bid to regulate and streamline the disposal of tender coconut waste in the commercial capital, Chairperson of Margao Municipal Council Damu Shirodkar has called for details from the mushrooming vendors, including the mode of disposal of coconut waste.
Days after the Margao Municipal Council imposed a ban on sale of tender coconuts in the city after struggling to dispose the mound of coconut waste, around 25-odd tender coconut vendors on Tuesday called on the Margao civic chief with a plea to resume the business activities.
The MMC chief point blank questioned the vendors the mode of disposing of their tender coconut waste, only to receive a reply from a couple of vendors they are disposing of their waste in the village of Colva and Betalbatim.
Shirodkar questioned the vendors how come the municipal workers come across mounds of coconut waste at around 7-8 places in the city if they are handling the waste at their level. Saying the MMC has no objection to the tender coconut business, Shirodkar however, mulled a system wherein the waste is disposed of in a safe and proper manner. “There have been allegations made directly against the Chairperson. We have nothing to say, but the fact remains that the civic body has to face these allegations just because the vendors are generating the coconut waste in the city,” he said.
After discussions, the MMC chairperson instructed the Market inspectors to obtain details from the vendors, pertaining to their name, place of business and mode of disposal of the coconut waste.
A four-member committee comprising of the vendors and the market inspectors have been set up to tackle all issues relating to the disposal of tender coconut waste in the commercial capital.
Meanwhile, the MMC chairperson has sought some time to crack a whip against the chicken and meat waste finding its way into the city. “We are on the job to zero in on the culprits involved in the disposal of the chicken and meat waste in the city,” he said, adding that the Council will come to the media with proof of illegal disposal of village waste into the city.
