Agitated chairperson warns of hefty fines

MMC chief with officials in tow visits wards, comes across 10 black spots

MARGAO
Even as the Margao Municipal Council continues to grapple with the garbage black spots across the city, Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar on Tuesday has warned of strict action including penalising unscrupulous elements with hefty fines.

As the Municipal Chairperson along with Vice-Chairperson Deepali Sawal, councillors Sandra Fernandes, Mahesh Amonkar, sanitary inspectors Viraj Arabekar and Sanjay Sanguelkar and civic officials and workers hopped from one ward to another on Tuesday morning, they came across as many as 10 black spots in the five wards inspected by the team.

A visibly agitated Chairperson Damu Shirodkar has warned citizens that the civic body will start penalising the culprits with hefty fines up to Rs 50,000 and seizures of vehicles involved in the garbage dumping at unauthorised spots.

The Municipal Chairperson has also suggested to the MMC sanitary officials to explore the possibility of removing the bins from the black spots. The civic workers were also told not to keep bundles of dry waste at the black spots for long. Sources said the Municipal truck drivers may be called to ensure they clear the dry waste bundles stored at the black spots on time.

“The Margao Municipality will go all out against those dumping waste in the Municipal jurisdiction at the black spots. This waste is not come from the citizens of Margao, but from outside the city limits. I would like to warn the miscreants that they all should brace up for hefty fines and attachment of vehicles in the near future,” Damu warned.
