Speaking to The Goan, Vaz stated that MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik had refused to give permission to install his banners in Mormugao constituency.
“I had completed the necessary procedure and had submitted my papers for permission, but was surprised when I came to know that Naik had refused to grant it,” said Vaz.
“Naik turns a blind eye to other people and politicians displaying their banners for all purposes, but when it came to my permission she denied it. This is nothing but political discrimination,” alleged Vaz.
“As Naik refused to grant me the necessary permission, I mounted the banners on a frame and made a human chain. Our volunteers are displaying the banners at various junctions in Mormugao constituency.
Vaz has now decided to go a step further and will oppose other banners installed in the port town.
“I will object to seasons greetings and other banners displayed by politicians and councillors everywhere. Let them also spend extra in the manner that I was forced to do,” added Vaz.
When contacted, MMC Chief Officer Deepali Naik said she has directed the staff to remove all the banners that were put up in the city and other areas under Defacement of Property Act.
“We have received a notice from the government in this regard, due to which I have removed the banners installed all over the port town,” said Naik. “The council is in the process of framing guidelines and identification of areas where we can allow people to put the banners,” added Naik.
Asked if she would allow councilors and politicians to install banners during the festive season, Naik replied: “I will refuse permission.”
