A photo of a Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Compactor without wheels in the MMC garage has been mocked on social media, prompting the MMC administrator to clarify that the vehicle was beyond repair and the tyres were being used on other vehicles.
"The compactor is instrumental in garbage collection, but the photo has revealed that compactors are in a bad state in the MMC,” said social activist Vinod Kinlekar, while highlighting the condition of the compactor.
“Recently, some outgoing councillors had boasted that they had got new compactors to resolve garbage issues. We now wonder what is the state of those compactors.”
“In the absence of compactors, how can MMC take up garbage collection smoothly? The MMC administrator must take up the matter with his superiors,” Kinlekar added.
When contacted, MMC Administrator Gurudas Pilarnekar clarified that the photo on social media was that of a compactor which had broken down and beyond repair.
"The old compactor without tyres is presently in our garage. We have new compactors already on the job of garbage collection, and we are doing our best with whatever resources available with us presently.”
“This compactor was outdated and condemned and it is better to buy a new compactor instead of repairing it. We have removed the tyres of the old compactor and are using them for other MMC vehicles which are in running condition. People should not misunderstand the matter,” said Pilarnekar.
