SEC planning civic polls in April, would prefer in June: Minister

VASCO
Stating that the State Election Commission (SEC) were tentatively planning to hold civic polls in April considering the Covid pandemic, Urban Development Minister Milind Naik on Tuesday said he would personally prefer municipal elections in June to get adequate time to work with aspirant candidates in Mormugao constituency.

"The State government never finalises the date for civic elections as it is the responsibility of the SEC and it has tentatively decided to hold the municipal polls by April end.”

“The reason could be due to the Covid pandemic and people may not come out in large numbers to cast their votes. We also witnessed a lower turnout for the recent ZP elections and this could be the reason to postpone the municipal polls by two months,” said Naik.

Naik said he would have prefered civic elections to be further delayed and conducted in June.

"Elections were due and we had even appointed administrators in municipalities, but elections have been tentatively moved to April.”

“All candidates have begun work in full swing and some are upset that the elections will be held in April. If you ask me personally, I feel that even April is too close a date for civic polls and I would have preferred elections in June. This would have given me some more time to meet up with aspiring candidates in my Mornugao constituency and work with them for the civic polls,” the minister said.
