The Margao Municipal Council (MMC) witnessed an uproar after councillor Mahesh Amonkar and a sanitary inspector came face to face in the sanitary section on Monday at noon over the question of imposing a fine on garbage violators.
As the sanitary section saw the City Father and sanitary inspector Sanjay Sanguelkar locked in a verbal duel, MMC employees from other sections rushed to the chamber only to find Amonkar and Sanguelkar in a heated argument over the fines for garbage violators.
Sources pointed out that the MMC had got the police attach a vehicle from the market after the owner was reportedly caught disposing of waste at the Sadekar lane, in the heart of the town.
Sanguelkar is believed to have told the violator to either pay a fine of Rs 5,000 or the police would attach his vehicle till the payment of the penalty.
Amonkar, however, sought to know from Sanguelkar whether MMC employs different yardsticks for different sets of people. He is believed to have questioned why the sanitary inspector had let off a violator with a fine of Rs 500 last week and why the latest violator was told to pay Rs 5,000.
The sanitary inspector is believed to have defended his decision by saying that the latest violator is liable to pay Rs 5,000 fine since he was reportedly involved in dumping commercial waste at the unauthorised garbage dumping site, even as sources pointed out that the previous violator was allowed to go scot-free with a petty fine due to political intervention.
