MARGAO

In an interesting development, the Margao Municipal Council has decided to extend the sopo contract by two more months upon levying 25 per cent fees.

Sources said the municipality had extended the sopo contract by a month in

view of the election code of conduct.

Sources in the know, however, said the civic body has now decided to extend the contract for two more months, including May and June by levying 25 per cent fees.

This means, the civic body will claim from the contractor Rs 7.47 lakh for the month of May and an equal installment for June.

The contractor was told to pay Rs 5.97 lakh to the civic body for the month of April.

While the civic body has extended the contract to the contractor by citing the election code of conduct, many an eyebrow has been raised as to why the civic body did not take measures to ensure that the annual auction was conducted by the body before awarding the contract.

It could not be ascertained whether the extension of the sopo contract by two more months without an auction in a new financial year conforms to the rules in force.
