After a four-day operation, the Margao Municipal Council has finally fixed the roof sheets of the Sonsodo waste treatment plant shed after two years.
The civic body has also sent around 22 truck-load of dry waste from Sonsodo to the Saligao waste treatment plant, while the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has almost covered the Sonsodo legacy dump.
Sonsodo had witnessed hectic activity after the issue had figured in the High Court last week. Margao Municipal Council Chief Officer Rohit Kadam informed that the civic body has fixed the roof sheets of the Sonsodo shed which were damaged around two years ago.
“The civic body requisitioned a heavy-duty crane to fix the roof. Since the crane could not move on the slope, another crane was requisitioned for support,” he said.
While the roof sheets of the shed were replaced by workers with the help of the crane, a couple of damaged sheets could not be replaced, since it was realized that the work was too risky during the monsoons.
As far as the dry waste lying at Sonsodo is concerned, the MMC is believed to have so far transported around 50 truck loads of the waste to the Saligao waste plant for treatment.
“The civic body has cleared a sizeable quantity of the dry waste from Sonsodo to the Saligao plant. We are in the process of sending the remaining waste to Saligao in dedicated vehicles,” the Chief Officer said.
To a question, he said the MMC is presently baling the dry waste generated in the city every day, adding that only the backlog of the dry waste is being sent to Saligao.
Meanwhile, the Goa Waste Management Corporation has almost covered the remaining portion of the Sonsodo legacy dump.
