MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday launched the Emergency Seva, a disaster management team to attend to disasters, including water logging and to clear trees from the roads, in the municipal jurisdiction.
A brainchild of Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, the Emergency Seva consist of a vehicle, manned by 12 labourers, two supervisors and will be equipped with tree cutting machines, crow bars, pickaxes etc.
The MMC Chairperson informed that the workers will man the Emergency Seva round the clock and will work in shifts. While one group will work from morning 6 am to 2 pm, the second group will be on duty from 2 pm till 10 pm every day during the monsoon period.
The MMC Chairperson said he discussed the idea with Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, who gave his go-ahead to the project.
Launching the service, the Margao MLA complimented the Chairperson for the concept, which will provide instant help and support to the public in an emergency.
“The South Goa Collecotrate has a disaster management cell working 24x7. But, this cell is looking after entire Salcete and sometimes is not able to promptly attend to emergencies. The emergency seva of the MMC will be of immense help to the people of Margao and Fatorda during the monsoon period,” he said.
Kamat told the Chairperson to procure all the equipment required to attend to the monsoon-related emergencies.
