All three buildings which have partially collapsed have either residents or shop owners occupying the structures and were issued with eviction notices by the MMC.
Asked if the MMC had initiated any action against those residing or occupying the three buildings despite being issued eviction notices, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik replied in the negative.
“Despite sending eviction notices citing that the three buildings are unsafe for occupation, people occupying those structures are doing so at their own risk. We had sent notices for the safety of residents and their families, clearly stating that if any tragedy strikes in future then MMC should not be blamed,” said Naik.
“We cannot force them to vacate as they will accuse MMC of taking action and will demand alternate accommodation, which we are not in a position to do so. We have sent notices to residents of Pushpanjali building and Happy Apartments, where the floor caved in, to meet
the Chief Officer Deepali Naik and me on Monday. We will renew our appeal to residents to vacate their premises in their own interest,” Naik added.
“As far as the building near Busy-Bee school at Desterro is concerned, I will also send them a notice to meet us in the MMC office, so that we can put forth a similar request.”
