Claiming that Margao Municipal officials have filed a false affidavit on the issue, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) on Monday in one voice objected plans to set up the Kabrastan on the land acquired at Sonsodo.
Cutting across party affiliations, the councillors belonging to the Goa Forward and BJP told the chairperson that the Sonsodo land located on a steep gradient is not suited to house burial grounds.
When Chief Officer Rohit Kadam read out a note on the Kabrastan issue for a decision in view of the issue coming under the High Court radar, former Chairperson Ganashyam Shirodkar was on his feet to raise his strong objection.
Quoting a submission made by Margao Municipal legal counsel in the High Court, Mr Padiyar that the MMC stands by a decision taken at the November 5, 2021 meeting held on the burning issues, Ganashyam pointed that the Municipal lawyer has told lies to the High Court.
He pointed out that neither the MMC had any meeting on November 5, nor has the Council taken any stand in support of the Kabrastan at Sonsodo. When Chief Officer Kadam sought to clarify that the November 5, 2021 meeting was a meeting the former MMC Chief Officer had with the Director of Municipal Administration and others on the kabrastan, Ganashyam and other councillors cried foul over the ex-CO’s decision by keeping the elected Council in the dark.
Saying the High Court had never insisted on a particular site while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) Ganashyam pointed out that the Court has only asked the Civic body to find out land which could be used for burial grounds.
At this juncture, Goa Forward councillor Raju Naik stood up and made it clear that the Sonsodo land on a hillock is not suited to set up burial grounds. BJP-backed councillors including Camilo Barretto, Milagrina Gomes, Sadanand Naik, Babita Naik were also on their feet to raise their objection to the burial ground at Sonsodo.
Ganashyam further pointed out that the recent feasibility report prepared by the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) has clearly pointed out that the Sonsodo land has a steep gradient, which in normal course is not suited for a burial ground.
Incidentally, even as the Goa Forward and BJP councillors from Fatorda expressed their strong reservations to the kabrastan atop the Sonsodo hillock, councillor Mahesh Amonkar, representing Khareband area, also opposed the new kabrastan site at Khareband.
