MMC racing against time to complete works at plant before next HC hearing

MARGAO
The Margao Municipal Council is ostensibly racing against time to complete the works at Sonsodo before the next date of hearing on August 29.

With the new baling machine commissioned at Sonsodo, the civic body hopes that it will help in expediting the baling of tons of dry waste generated in the city. Sources, however, said it may take some time for things to stabilise on the dry waste management given that a huge backlog of dry waste dumped at Sonsodo is awaiting baling.

Unlike the past, Municipal engineers are now required to report at the Sonsodo waste dumping site even on Sundays to monitor the ongoing work. As per the directions of the Director of Municipal Administration, the Margao Municipal Chief Officer is required to submit a report every evening of the waste transported to the Saligao waste treatment plant from Sonsodo. This work is being compiled by a municipal engineer before the same is forwarded to the Chief Officer.

A senior MMC official pointed out that ongoing works at Sonsodo are being closely monitored by the municipal engineers to ensure that some of these works are completed before the High Court hearing scheduled on August 29.

Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar informed that works taken up at Sonsodo are all progressing as per the schedule. He said the MMC is on the job to build a concrete road around the waste management shed which will be used as a platform to segregate waste at the site. “All the works presently underway are progressing as per the scheduled. We are closely monitoring the situation,” Damu added.
