Maina Sports Club advanced to the semifinals of the 24th Our Lady of Merces All Goa 8-a-side football tournament, at Chinchinim Church ground on Sunday. Maina defeated Arlem YA, Raia 6-5 (1-1) in a tiebreaker.
At the beginning of the match, Raia's Garrison Fernandes missed an easy goal. However, Maina's Maldino Rodrigues scored a powerful right-footer in the 11th minute, leaving no chance for the rival keeper. Danny Fernandes managed to equalise for Raia in the 16th minute with a well-placed header off a cross from Velito Cruz.
The teams attacked and counterattacked after the break. In the final minutes of the match, Maina's Maldino Rodrigues missed a volley narrowly. During the shootout, Maina scored through Jollan, Joliston, Caitano, Christian, and Edwin. Velito, Klins, Levan, and Danny scored for Arlem. The winners will now face holders Navelim VA in the semis.
