MMC sanitary inspectors told to crack whip on sewage pollution

The first meeting of the Margao Municipal Sanitation committee headed by Chairman, Councilor Camilo Barretto discussed the entire gamut of sanitation and garbage issues plaguing the commercial capital on Monday.

Instructions were issued to the sanitary inspectors to come down heavily on households and commercial establishments for releasing raw sewage into the drains. The sanitary inspectors were further directed to inspect all the hotels and eateries for violations. Directions were issued to the waste workers to ensure that garbage trucks are cleaned up before they come on the roads everyday, with the Chairman issuing a veiled warning that people will block the trucks if the stinking vehicles ply on the roads.

The meeting also took stock over the fast food kiosks, with the chairman seeking to know the number of illegal and legal gaddas in the city. The meeting also took stock of the waste generated by the fast food kiosks. The market inspectors have been told to survey the fast food kiosks in the city.

The meeting also reviewed the progress of the operation of the lone bio-methanation plant in the city, with the chairman insisting on periodic inspection.

The issue of segregation of waste collected door to door also cropped up at the meeting. Assistant Engineer Vishant Naik insisted on the segregation saying no treatment plant will accept garbage from Margao if unsegregated waste is handed over.

The issue of unauthorized dumping of waste at the black spots also came up for discussion. Members of the Sanitary and garbage panel demanded hefty fines on the unscrupulous elements for dumping waste.
