The Margao Municipal Council on Monday cracked a whip against illegal fruit handcarts that have mushroomed in the commercial capital in recent days.
As many as five illegal handcarts selling fruits were seized by a team of municipal inspectors on Monday.
These were involved in the illegal business near the ICICI bank and other parts of
the city.
Market inspector Seema Godge and her team confiscated the handcarts and kept them in the Margao municipal garden.
Action against the handcarts will be initiated by the MMC officials as per the rules in force.
Officials in the know informed that illegal handcarts selling fruits have made their presence felt across the commercial capital, raising eyebrows whether any organized gang is involved in the business.
Municipal officials pointed out that though the MMC had issued permits for a specified number of handcarts to operate in the city, some of the unscrupulous vendors have misused the permits by operating additional handcarts illegally.
