MARGAO
Finally, the Margao Municipal Council is set to appoint a sopo contractor to collect the sopo fees in the commercial capital, beginning from the new calendar year.
Out of a total three bids, one bid was rejected by the civic body on Thursday for want of proper documents. The remaining two bids were evaluated by the civic body and the highest bidder, who has quoted around Rs 85 lakh will bag the contract to collect sopo for the next 12 months.
Margao Municipal Chief Officer Melvyn Vaz told The Goan that while the civic body has rejected one bid after it was found that the bidder did not submit the relevant documents, the two bidders had quoted Rs 85 lakh and Rs 81 lakh respectively.
“We will award the sopo collection contractor to the highest bid amounting to Rs 85 lakh”, the Chief Officer said adding that the sopo collection tender had been repeatedly getting delayed under one issue or another.
“Since the civic body has found that the highest bid amounting to Rs 85 lakh is in order, the bidder will be given the contract to collect the sopo fees in the city”, he said.
The MMC is presently collecting the sopo fees departmentally, with many in the civic body and outside raising questions on the falling revenue from sopo over the last several months, resulting in a drain in revenue.
