MMC still awaits logistics support for waste segregation

MARGAO

Margao Municipal Council has been literally left high and dry as the promised logistics support from the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) to streamline waste collection at source has still not come in till date.

That’s not all. The Director of Municipal Administration, R Menaka, who had promised the much-needed logistics and infrastructure support to the Margao civic body stands transferred as the new Collector of North Goa district.

It was Menaka, IAS, who had taken the initiative to support the Margao municipality with the logistics after a regional team of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had directed the civic body and the government to immediately take up the exercise of waste collection of source in the commercial capital.

Sources in the Margao municipality informed that while the civic body had sent its detailed list of requirements to the DMA’s office required for waste collection at source, it is yet to receive any of the items till date.

Leave alone receiving the fleet of garbage compactors and trucks, the municipality, officials in the know said they have not even received the bins and polythene bags required for waste segregation inside the 25,000-odd households. The municipality, sources said, had planned to distribute one polythene bag to each of the households to store plastic and dry waste on the assumption that the

DMA will supply the goods, but in vain.

Municipal officials keep their fingers crossed even as reports said the officials in the DMA office held a meeting to review the requirements of the Margao civic body.

Margao municipal engineer, Agostinho Mesquita, who has been appointed as the dedicated officer in charge of solid waste management informed that the civic body has already started waste segregation of source in the city through the contractor as well as with the municipal daily wage workforce.
