When will the Margao Municipal Council finally stop dumping of dry waste at the Old Fish Market, just behind the Margao Municipal building located in the heart of the city?
Well, a waste mound comprising of coconut waste, thermocol waste and mixed waste is taking shape at the Old Fish Market when the Municipality boasts of treating the dry waste generated in the city.
Questions are being raised in many quarters how come the civic body has failed to address the issue of safe disposal of the coconut waste and green waste. Take note, the coconut waste mound at the Old Fish Market is just the tip of the ice berg, with coconut and green waste found dumped at several places in the city for want of space.
A senior Municipal official conceded that the Margao civic body has been struggling to dispose of the coconut and green waste after the High Court issued directions to the Municipality to stop disposal of dry and green waste at the open space near the KTC bus stand.
Critics, however, question the delay by the Civic body in exploring ways and means to handle and dispose of the coconut waste and green waste. “The MMC should explain to citizens the steps initiated by the civic body to address the issue of coconut and green waste. Have the civic body placed any orders to procure machinery to treat the waste and when can the machinery see the light of the day in the commercial capital,” questioned a citizen.
The citizen added that the MMC should stop crying over lack of machinery or technique, but instead use funds under the 15th Finance Commission to procure technology adopted by other Urban Municipal bodies to address the coconut waste and green waste.
