MMC to start work on 10-tn waste gasification plant at Sonsodo

Says site has improved; contractor to begin work this month

MARGAO

Margao Municipal officials on Tuesday said that work to set up the 10-tonne gasification plant at the Sonsodo waste management site will begin soon.

A team from the MMC, including Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar and Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai, visited Sonsodo on Tuesday morning to review the situation.

Municipal Engineer Deepak Desai told the media that the contractor appointed to build the gasification plant will start work later this month. He said the Council has signed a tripartite agreement with the Goa Energy Development Agency and the Pune-based contractor for the project. The plant will mainly treat mixed waste collected from the city’s black spots.

When asked, Desai said Sonsodo has seen a major improvement over the past year. He said the Margao Municipal Council will soon build a concrete road inside the site to ensure smooth movement of garbage trucks.

“Sonsodo has seen a full turnaround. There is no foul smell and no flies. Garbage from the city is now sent to the Cacora waste management plant for treatment,” he said.

He added that the large waste management shed has been completely cleared of waste.

Desai also said the entire Sonsodo site is now covered by CCTV cameras to strengthen security.
