The Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) had directed the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) to appoint a Traffic Management Committee (TMC) along with other committees to monitor the traffic and parking in the city.
Though MMC formed the TMC, the committee failed to coordinate with the RTO and the Vasco traffic cell to manage the traffic and parking.
Speaking to The Goan, Alfred D’Costa said the parking woes are increasing with vendors selling fruits and other items along the footpath and at major road junctions. “Vendors are selling mangoes along the two wheeler parking lot near Canara Bank and in the evening, Bhel Puri vendors do business at all the major road junctions, causing traffic hazards,” said D’Costa.
Shayam Raiturkar of Vasco said city buses are over speeding, while two and other four wheelers do not even allow the pedestrians to cross at the zebra crossing. “These buses, trucks, tankers, other four and two wheelers zoom off even near the zebra crossing, giving scant respect to the pedestrians who are crossing the road,” said Raiturkar.
When asked whether the council has formed the TMC, MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik said the committee was formed in 2016 and only once conducted a survey of parking lot along with the traffic cell and RTO officials.
When it was brought to Naik’s notice of vendors occupy parking lot and over speeding vehicles, Naik said as far as vendors are concerned, he had directed the market inspectors to vacate them and added that he had also urged the traffic police to control the vehicular traffic.
“I have done my duty and if the MMC market inspectors and the traffic police do not act, then what can I do,” Naik asked.
“As far as TMC is concerned, we met only once and after that we did not follow up. I will call the TMC and the other officials in the next two days and work out some solution,” assured Naik.
