MMC transported 200-plus dry waste bales to factories in K’taka: Official

With two days left to file compliance report on Sonsodo on the directions issued by the Director, Urban Development, Margao Municipal official on Sunday said the civic body has transported around 200 plus dry waste bales from Sonsodo to the cement factories in Karnataka in the last two days.

Margao Municipal Chief Officer, Gaurish Sankhwalkar further told The Goan on Sunday that the civic body in coordination with the Goa Police has set up a mechanism to intercept waste coming into the city from the neighbouring villages of Salcete. He said patrolling by the police and the MMC team will help stop inflow of waste from the villages into the city and also rid the city of the black spots.

“We have set up a cell comprising of the sanitary inspectors to monitor the waste entering the city from the village. Strict instructions have been issued to challan the miscreants as per the fines prescribed under the Solid Waste Management rules and impound the vehicles,” he said.

A team headed by market inspector Viraj Arabekar was seen stationed near the Comba subway black spot on Sunday. Arabekar said the MMC has caught red-handed around six persons for dumping waste and have imposed total fine of Rs 9,000 on the violators.

Saying that the Municipal engineers have started working from Sonsodo office in rotation, the Chief Officer said at least three works proposed at Sonsodo have commenced at the site in the last three days.
