MMC vice-chairperson's post: Margao MLA, BJP councillors to go into huddle to finalise candidate

MARGAO
Ruling BJP-backed councillors will go into a huddle with Margao MLA Digambar Kamat to zero in on the candidate to contest election for the vacant post of Margao Municipal vice-chairperson scheduled on February 13.

While former MMC vice-chairperson Babita Naik has emerged as a strong contender for the vacant post, the candidate is expected to be officially decided at the meeting the councillors will have with the Margao MLA on Monday.

The post of MMC vice-chairperson has been left vacant after outgoing vice-chairperson Deepali Sawal submitted her resignation to the Margao MLA, who in turn has forwarded the resignation letter to the office of the Director of Municipal Administration.

Ruling party sources informed that the name of councillor Babita Naik has been doing the rounds as the likely candidate to contest the election. Sources said that the BJP leaders had promised Babita and her councillor husband Sadanand Naik to make her the vice-chairperson after Deepali vacates the chair.

Deepali had assumed office as the MMC vice-chairperson after the 2021 Municipal election and has been presiding over the post since then.

Meanwhile, Director Urban Development, Brijesh Manerkar has appointed Margao Deputy Collector Ramesh Gaonkar as the presiding officer to preside over and conduct the special meeting of the elected councillors of the Margao Municipal Council scheduled on February 13, at 11 am, in the office at the Margao Municipal hall to elect the vice-chairperson.
