Saxttikars keep date with Margao Carnival as floats showcase rich cultural heritage

Saxttikars kept the date with the annual Carnival float parade in the commercial capital on Sunday as thousands of people from the taluka countryside thronged the city to partake in the Carnival festivities.

Revellers occupied every inch of space along the traditional route, from the Holy Spirit Church Square to the Margao Municipal square as they enthusiastically cheered and welcomed the floats led by King Momo and his entourage.

With the Tourism Department laying stress on tradition and culture in this year’s festivities, many a float showcased the rich cultural heritage of the State, be it cashew feni distilling or jaggery production in a traditional way. One could have a glimpse of the float showing traditional occupations of yesteryears.

Officers and personnel of the Indian Navy marched through the city with the traditional brass band. A float depicting a naval ship wends its way along the route.

Margao Municipal Chairperson Damu Shirodkar and the Chairperson of the Margao Carnival Committee councillor Milagrina Gomes expressed their satisfaction over the turnout of thousands of people to witness the grand carnival parade.

Shirodkar told the media that a total of 76 floats participated in the Carnival parade in the city including 19 floats in the club and institution category, family (15), Fun  Junky car (13), traditional (1), sponsored (3) and fun junky car (13).
